Daniel called the police.
Noah finally gave them the address.
When officers entered the small rental house on the edge of town, Amy was gone.
Her clothes were gone.
Her personal documents were gone.
Even the family photographs had been removed.
But one bedroom had been left untouched.

On his pillow sat an envelope.
Inside was five hundred dollars and a short letter.
I’m sorry. I thought I could protect you.
There was no signature.
Emma stood beside Daniel while police searched the house.
Then she noticed something behind a loose photograph frame.
A faded picture.
Daniel picked it up.
It showed Amy.
Alive.
Standing beside a baby.
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There was a date written on the back.
The baby had been born thirteen years earlier.
One year before Noah.
Daniel stared at the date.
Then at Noah.
This photograph wasn't proof that Amy was Noah’s mother.
