Chapter 16 - Emma's Question
Amy tried to rebuild her relationship with Emma.
At first, Emma refused.
She would not answer calls.
She would not visit.
She would not call Amy “Mom.”
Then one afternoon, Amy found Emma waiting outside the same classroom where Daniel had read the folded note.
Emma held an old photograph.
It showed Amy holding her as a baby.
“Did you love me?”
Amy's face crumbled.
“Every second.”
“More than Noah?”
Amy shook her head.
“Love doesn't work like that.”
“Then why did you choose him?”
Amy finally said what Emma needed to hear.
“I didn't choose him instead of you.”
She stepped closer.
“I chose fear instead of trusting your father.”
Emma began crying.
“And I have regretted it every day.”
For the first time, mother and daughter hugged.
