The Woman Who Was Dead

Chapter 02 - The Woman Who Was Dead
Daniel stared at Noah as though the classroom walls had disappeared.
“That’s impossible.”
Noah took a step backward.
He had expected Emma to read the note.
Not her father.
“My mom told me never to talk about it,” Noah said. “She said it could hurt people.”
Emma finally raised her eyes.
“My mom was named Amy too.”
Silence filled the room.
Noah looked at her.
Daniel looked from one child to the other.
Six years earlier, Amy Carter had disappeared after her car was found near a flooded bridge outside their small Pennsylvania town. Police recovered her purse, her wedding ring, and one shoe.
They never recovered her body.
After months of searching, authorities declared her presumed dead.
Daniel had raised Emma alone ever since.
Now a twelve-year-old boy was standing in front of him claiming that his mother was also named Amy.
Daniel forced himself to remain calm.
“What is your mother’s full name?”
Noah hesitated.
“Amy Miller.”
The last name meant nothing.
Then Daniel asked one final question.
“Does she have a scar above her left eyebrow?”
Noah’s mouth opened slightly.
May you like
“Yes.”
Daniel had to grip the desk to keep himself standing.
