Amy Comes Home

Chapter 11 - Amy Comes Home
Daniel saw her through the hospital window.
Six years older.
Thinner.
Exhausted.
But alive.
Amy looked at him and began crying.
Daniel felt no joy.
Not yet.
There was too much pain between them.
Emma stood behind him.
Amy saw her daughter.
Her knees nearly gave out.
“Emma.”
Emma didn't move.
“You're alive,” she whispered.
Amy nodded.
“You were alive every birthday?”
“Yes.”
“Every Christmas?”
Amy closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Emma's voice broke.
“And you never came home.”
Amy tried to approach her.
Emma stepped backward.
That single movement hurt Amy more than anything Daniel could have said.
“I thought Richard would kill you.”
“So you let me think you were dead?”
Amy had no answer that could repair six lost years.
Emma turned and walked away.
Daniel remained.
He looked at the woman he had once loved.
Then he asked the question he had been carrying since the classroom.
“Why did you have Noah?”
May you like
Amy stared at him.
“Because Richard kidnapped him.”
