Daniel's Decision

Chapter 18 - Daniel's Decision
Months passed.
Richard pleaded guilty to kidnapping, fraud, witness intimidation, and multiple related crimes.
Mark also faced prison.
Amy remained in town.
Daniel treated her kindly.
But kindness was not reconciliation.
One evening, Amy asked him the question she had feared.
“Could we ever be us again?”
Daniel looked at the woman he had mourned for six years.
Part of him still loved her.
But another part understood that love alone could not rebuild what fear and secrecy had destroyed.
“I don't know.”
Amy nodded.
It was painful.
But honest.
Daniel continued.
“I can't give you back the marriage we had.”
Amy looked away.
“But maybe,” he said, “we can build something we never had.”
She turned toward him.
“What?”
“Trust.”
For the first time, Amy smiled without pretending everything was fixed.
