The Woman at the Counter

Chapter 09 - The Woman at the Counter

Elena refused to leave Caleb.

Federal protection was arranged, but she stayed.

That night, while Caleb slept on a couch in a secured office, Elena sat beside him.

She studied his face.

She saw Owen.

The same eyebrows.

The same stubborn chin.

The same habit of curling one hand beneath his cheek while sleeping.

She remembered Owen at nine years old.

He had once broken a neighbor's window with a baseball and spent three weeks secretly saving allowance money to replace it.

He wasn't perfect.

But he wasn't a thief.

Elena wondered how easily anger had allowed her to believe the worst.

At 2:13 in the morning, Caleb woke.

"Are you really my aunt?"

"Yes."

"Do I have grandparents?"

Elena swallowed.

"One grandmother."

"Does she know about me?"

Elena looked away.

"No."

"Why?"

Because adults made mistakes and children inherited the silence.

Elena couldn't say that.

So she told the truth.

"Because our family got angry and stopped talking when we should've been asking questions."

Caleb considered that.

"That's stupid."

Elena laughed through her tears.

"Yes. It is."

Then Caleb reached into his hoodie pocket.

He removed a small piece of paper.

"My mom gave me this too."

Elena stared at him.

"You had another note?"

"She told me not to show it unless I found you."

Written on the paper was an address.

Beneath it were the words:

He comes home every Thursday.

Daniel checked the address.

The house belonged to a man named Victor Shaw.

The private security director who had investigated Owen Carter six years earlier.

And according to official records, Victor Shaw had died three months ago.
