The Lie About His Father

Chapter 08 - The Lie About His Father
Elena's eyes moved toward Daniel.
He understood immediately.
"Sarah called?"
Elena didn't answer.
Caleb did.
"She said not to trust the police."
Daniel's face tightened.
"She may be right."
He removed his badge.
Then he placed it on the table.
"Don't trust this."
He pointed toward the badge.
"Trust what I do next."
Daniel revealed something he had hidden for six years.
Owen had given him a list of five names connected to the cargo theft.
One was an airport contractor.
One was a police lieutenant.
Two worked for a private security company.
The fifth name belonged to Grant Hale, owner of Hale Aviation Logistics.
Grant was wealthy.
Respected.
A major donor to local charities.
He also funded half the airport's expansion projects.
Every investigation touching his company had quietly disappeared.
Daniel believed Owen had been framed because he discovered Grant's operation.
"And Sarah?" Elena asked.
"She must have found something recently."
Daniel looked at the cash.
"Something that brought all of this back."
Federal investigators examined the serial numbers.
Hours later, the result arrived.
The money wasn't from the original airport theft.
It had been printed and circulated years later.
Which meant the duffel wasn't stolen money from Owen's case.
It was newer.
Much newer.
Someone had collected nearly six hundred thousand dollars in cash and hidden it in Sarah's home.
Why?
The answer came from the ledger.
Payments.
Dates.
Names.
Police officers.
City officials.
Airport employees.
The money wasn't stolen property.
It was a bribery fund.
Sarah hadn't been hiding Owen's crime.
She had been hiding proof of someone else's.
And one name appeared more often than every other.
Grant Hale.
Daniel looked at Caleb.
"Your father wasn't running away with money."
"He was trying to expose the people paying it."
For the first time, Caleb understood something.
His father might have been innocent.
May you like
But somewhere out there, his mother was still missing.
And the people who had destroyed his father now knew Caleb had their money.
