The Name No One Said

Chapter 03 - The Name No One Said
Caleb had grown up with only three photographs of his father.
In one, Owen Carter was holding him as a baby.
In another, he was standing beside Sarah at a summer fair.
The third showed Owen sitting on the front steps of a little yellow house that Caleb barely remembered.
Whenever Caleb asked questions, his mother gave the same answer.
"Your father loved you. Some things are complicated."
Caleb had eventually stopped asking.
Now, inside a quiet airport office, a police officer was telling him his father had been accused of stealing nearly two million dollars.
"I don't believe you," Caleb said.
Daniel nodded.
"You shouldn't believe everything you hear today."
Elena watched him carefully.
There was history behind his eyes.
"What aren't you telling us?" she asked.
Daniel closed the blinds.
Six years ago, he had been a young airport patrol officer.
Owen Carter had come to him three days before the money disappeared.
Owen believed someone inside Mason Ridge's private cargo operation was using legitimate shipments to move illegal cash.
He had names.
Dates.
Flight numbers.
Daniel told him to bring everything to investigators.
Owen never got the chance.
The cash vanished.
Security footage appeared to show Owen entering the cargo vault.
His employee access card was found near an abandoned vehicle.
Then a burned car registered in Owen's name was discovered seventy miles away.
No body was conclusively identified.
But the case was closed.
Owen Carter became a dead thief.
"Why didn't you tell anyone he came to you?" Elena asked.
"I did."
Daniel's voice turned bitter.
"My statement disappeared from the case file."
Elena felt cold.
Caleb sat silently.
Then he asked the question no adult in the room wanted to answer.
"So my dad might still be alive?"
Daniel looked at him.
"I don't know."
Caleb pointed toward the duffel.
"Then maybe my mom does."
At that exact moment, Daniel's radio crackled.
An officer had been sent to Sarah Carter's home.
The front door was open.
The kitchen had been torn apart.
May you like
Sarah was gone.
And someone had searched beneath the floorboards.
