The Mother Comes Home

Chapter 17 - The Mother Comes Home
Sarah returned home three weeks later.
The broken door had been replaced.
The kitchen floor had been repaired.
But she couldn't sleep there.
Every sound reminded her of the night everything changed.
Elena offered her guest room.
Sarah accepted.
For the first time, Caleb lived with an aunt he had never known existed.
It was awkward.
Then it became funny.
Elena burned pancakes.
Caleb complained that her television was "older than dinosaurs."
Sarah discovered Elena still kept Owen's high school baseball glove in a closet.
Little by little, a family began forming around the places where one had broken.
Owen didn't move in.
He rented a small apartment nearby.
He started therapy.
He met Caleb twice a week.
Sometimes they played baseball.
Sometimes they talked.
Sometimes Caleb refused to see him.
Owen came back the next week anyway.
That was how trust returned.
Not through speeches.
Through showing up.
One afternoon, Caleb asked him the question Owen feared most.
"Are you going to disappear again?"
Owen knelt in front of him.
"No."
"What if someone threatens you?"
"I ask for help."
"What if you're scared?"
"I stay."
Caleb studied his face.
"Promise?"
Owen shook his head.
"I've made promises before."
He placed a hand over his heart.
"This time, I'll prove it."
Caleb didn't hug him.
Not yet.
But when Owen left, Caleb stood at the window and watched until his father's car disappeared.
Then he whispered to Sarah:
"I think he's trying."
Sarah smiled sadly.
"So are all of us."
But the family still had one final battle ahead.

Owen Carter's name remained officially connected to the crime.
And clearing it would require him to stand in court and face the people who destroyed his life.
