The Man Caleb Remembered

Chapter 13 - The Man Caleb Remembered
Owen didn't ask Caleb to forgive him.
That was the first thing Elena respected about him.
He sat across from his son and said the truth.
"I failed you."
Caleb's eyes remained hard.
"You were alive."
"Yes."
"You knew where I lived."
"Yes."
"You knew my birthdays."
Owen lowered his head.
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you come?"
Owen explained.
After being framed, he tried clearing his name.
Every attempt brought threats closer to Sarah and Caleb.
Eventually, he became convinced that disappearing was the only way to keep them safe.
It had seemed like sacrifice.
Now he understood what it had really cost.
"I thought staying away made me a good father."
Owen's voice broke.
"I was wrong."
Caleb wiped his eyes angrily.
"Good fathers come home."
Owen nodded.
"They do."
There was no magical reunion.
No running embrace.
Only two people sitting across from each other with six years of pain between them.
Then Caleb asked about Sarah.
Owen's expression changed.
He had returned because Victor Shaw contacted him.
Shaw revealed the bribery ledger existed and that Sarah had become involved.
Owen tried reaching her.
Grant Hale's men found him first.
He escaped near the airport.
But he believed Sarah was being moved again.
"Where?" Daniel asked.
Owen hesitated.
"There is one place Hale owns that isn't officially connected to him."
An abandoned private airstrip outside the city.
Grant had once used it for cargo transfers.
Daniel immediately contacted federal authorities.
Owen grabbed his arm.
"Be careful."
Daniel looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Grant isn't the person who scares me most."
Owen revealed the final secret.
Someone inside the original investigation had ordered his death.
Not Grant.
Someone higher.
Someone who still worked at Mason Ridge.
Daniel asked for the name.
Owen answered.
May you like
Daniel went completely silent.
Because the person Owen named was Daniel's own police captain.
