The Boy Who Walked Into the Airport With a Bag Full of Cash

Chapter 01 - The Boy Who Walked Into the Airport With a Bag Full of Cash

## chapter 01 - The Bag on the Counter

The first thing Elena Brooks noticed was that the boy was alone.

He couldn't have been older than nine. Curly brown hair pushed out from beneath the hood of an oversized teal sweatshirt, and both hands were wrapped around the handles of a black duffel bag that looked far too heavy for him.

It was just after eight on a bright Monday morning at Mason Ridge Regional Airport. Travelers hurried toward security. Wheels rattled across the polished floor. Boarding announcements echoed through the terminal.

But the boy wasn't looking for a flight.

He walked straight toward Elena's customer assistance counter.

Two airport police officers stood twenty feet away.

"Can I help you, sweetheart?" Elena asked.

The boy lifted the duffel onto the counter with a grunt.

"My name is Caleb Carter."

Elena smiled gently.

"Okay, Caleb. Where are your parents?"

The boy didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked over his shoulder.

Only then did Elena notice how frightened he was.

"My mom told me to come here if she didn't come home last night."

Elena's smile disappeared.

She reached for the phone beneath her desk.

"Caleb, before I call anyone, tell me what's in the bag."

"My mom said I wasn't supposed to open it."

"Did she tell you who to give it to?"

Caleb nodded.

"Someone named Daniel."

One of the officers behind them stopped walking.

Elena saw his face change.

Caleb slowly unzipped the duffel.

The top folded back.

Elena forgot how to breathe.

Inside were rows of bundled hundred-dollar bills.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Maybe more.

And sitting on top of the money was a small folded note.

Officer Daniel Reyes stepped closer.

He stared at the handwriting.

Then he looked at Caleb.

"Where did your mother get this bag?"

Caleb's lower lip trembled.

"She said it belonged to my dad."

Daniel went pale.

Elena noticed.

"Why does that name mean something to you?" she demanded.

Daniel looked at the boy for a long moment.

May you like

Then he said the one thing Caleb had never expected to hear.

"Because I knew your father."
