The Sister Who Knew Too Late

Chapter 15 - The Sister Who Knew Too Late

The property belonged to Owen and Elena's late father.

An old cabin stood near Red Creek, forty miles outside the city.

Elena hadn't visited it in years.

Grant Hale knew about it because Owen had once listed the property on an employee emergency contact form.

Federal agents arrived before sunrise.

Sarah was found inside.

Alive.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

But alive.

When Caleb saw his mother step from the ambulance, he ran.

This time, he didn't hesitate.

Sarah dropped to her knees and held him.

Every fear Caleb had been holding finally escaped.

He cried against her shoulder.

"You didn't come home."

"I know, baby."

"You promised."

"I know."

"I waited."

Sarah held him tighter.

"I'm so sorry."

A few feet away stood Owen.

Sarah looked up.

Their eyes met.

Six years disappeared and returned at the same time.

She didn't run to him.

Neither did he approach her.

Some wounds needed more than a reunion.

Later, Elena entered Sarah's hospital room.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Elena said what she should have said six years earlier.

"I'm sorry."

Sarah looked away.

"I called you seventeen times."

"I know."

"I begged you to listen."

"I know."

"My son grew up without his family because everyone decided Owen was guilty before asking me what I knew."

Elena cried.

She didn't defend herself.

That mattered.

Finally, Sarah held out her hand.

Elena took it.

"I can't erase it," Elena whispered.

"No."

Sarah looked toward Caleb sleeping nearby.

"But maybe you can stop wasting what's left."

Elena nodded.

Outside the room, Owen waited alone.

Sarah eventually asked to see him.

But before he entered, she gave Elena one warning.

"Don't expect a happy ending just because the bad man was arrested."

Elena understood.

May you like

The arrest was only the end of the crime.

For the family, healing was just beginning.
