The Man Behind the Uniform

Chapter 04 - The Man Behind the Uniform

The airport police immediately treated Sarah Carter as a missing person.

But Daniel had another problem.

Someone knew about the bag.

Someone had reached Sarah's house after she removed it from hiding.

And if that person discovered Caleb had brought it to Mason Ridge Airport, the boy could be in danger.

Daniel requested federal assistance.

Then his captain ordered him off the case.

The order came less than twenty minutes later.

Elena watched Daniel lower his phone.

"What's wrong?"

"My captain says I'm too personally connected."

"Aren't you?"

"Yes."

Daniel looked toward Caleb.

"But that isn't why they're removing me."

Before Elena could ask what he meant, two detectives entered the office.

They wanted the money transferred immediately.

Daniel stood in front of the duffel.

"Under whose authority?"

One detective produced paperwork.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he refused.

Caleb watched the adults argue.

He didn't understand jurisdiction or evidence custody.

But he understood fear.

His mother had taught him something important.

When people lie, they often speak too quickly.

One of the detectives was speaking very quickly.

Caleb suddenly tugged Elena's sleeve.

"That's him."

She bent down.

"Who?"

"The man from yesterday."

Elena froze.

Caleb pointed toward the second detective.

"He was outside our house."

Daniel heard him.

The room went silent.

The detective's expression changed for only a second.

But it was enough.

Daniel locked the evidence room door.

"You two aren't taking anything."

The detective reached toward his jacket.

Daniel's hand moved toward his radio.

Elena pulled Caleb behind the counter.

No weapon was drawn.

No one shouted.

But the tension was unmistakable.

Then federal agents entered from the terminal.

The two detectives were separated for questioning.

One was released.

The other wasn't.

Before being taken away, he looked directly at Caleb.

And smiled.

That smile stayed with the boy.

May you like

Because it didn't look like the smile of a man who had lost.

It looked like the smile of someone who knew something they didn't.
