The Father on Trial

Chapter 18 - The Father on Trial
The courtroom was packed.
Reporters filled the back rows.
For years, Owen Carter had been remembered as a thief who died while escaping justice.
Now he walked through the front doors alive.
Sarah sat beside Caleb.
Elena sat on his other side.
Daniel testified first.
Then Victor Shaw.
Then Captain Sloan.
Piece by piece, the old story collapsed.
The altered footage.
The missing police statement.
The planted access card.
The fake vehicle evidence.
Finally, Owen took the stand.
He admitted running.
He admitted hiding.
He admitted failing to trust the legal system after realizing parts of it were corrupted.
The prosecutor asked whether he regretted disappearing.
Owen looked directly at Caleb.
"Every day."
The hearing ended shortly before sunset.
Owen's original charges were formally dismissed.
His record was cleared.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Owen ignored them.
He walked toward his son.
Caleb held the old photograph.
The one of Owen holding him as a baby.
"I don't remember this," Caleb said.
"I do."
"Was I annoying?"
Owen smiled.
"Extremely."
Caleb almost laughed.
Then his face became serious.
"Mom says forgiving somebody doesn't mean pretending they didn't hurt you."
"She's right."
"And it doesn't happen all at once."
"She's right about that too."
Caleb looked down.
Then he stepped forward.
He hugged his father.
Owen closed his eyes.
He didn't hold too tightly.
He was almost afraid the moment would disappear.
Caleb whispered:
"You still have to earn the rest."
Owen laughed through his tears.
"I know."
Behind them, Sarah watched.
For the first time in six years, she allowed herself to believe something.
