The Flight Home

Chapter 20 - The Flight Home

One year after Caleb walked into Mason Ridge Airport carrying a black duffel filled with cash, he returned.

This time, he carried a blue backpack.

No money.

No secret note.

No fear.

Sarah walked beside him.

Owen pulled two suitcases.

Elena followed, complaining that everyone had packed too much even though half the luggage belonged to her.

Daniel met them near security.

He bent down toward Caleb.

"Bringing me any mysterious bags today?"

Caleb smiled.

"Nope."

"Good."

"Maybe next year."

Daniel laughed.

"Please don't."

They were flying to Colorado to visit Caleb's grandmother.

Elena had already told her everything.

The first phone call had lasted three hours.

There had been anger.

Grief.

Apologies.

And finally, an old woman asking when she could meet the grandson she never knew she had.

Before entering security, Caleb stopped at Elena's counter.

The same counter.

He placed his backpack on top.

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Caleb looked around the terminal.

"This is where I found my family."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

She touched his cheek.

"This is where your family found its way back to you."

Owen stood beside Sarah.

Their hands touched.

This time, neither pulled away.

Nothing was perfect.

Owen could never recover the years he had missed.

Elena could never answer the calls she had ignored.

Sarah could never forget the fear she endured.

But they had learned something more valuable than a perfect past.

They had learned what to do with the future.

Caleb picked up his backpack.

"Come on. We're going to miss the plane."

They walked toward the gate together.

A year earlier, a frightened little boy had entered the airport carrying a fortune that belonged to criminals.

He left carrying something worth far more.

His mother's hand in one of his.

His father's in the other.

And for the first time in his life, Caleb Carter didn't have to wonder whether the people he loved would still be there when he turned around.

They were.

And this time, they were all going home together.
