The Photograph Under the Iron

Chapter 09 - The Photograph Under the Iron

The next morning Claire asked Luke about the photograph.

“The one on the table,” she said. “Why was it there?”

Luke remembered it clearly.

Their wedding day.

Claire in a simple ivory dress. Luke in his Army blues. Evelyn standing behind them with a smile that now seemed impossible to read.

“I thought she was trying to destroy it.”

“She was.”

Claire opened her purse and removed the photograph.

One corner had a brown scorch mark.

“I grabbed it after you went upstairs.”

Luke ran his thumb near the damaged edge.

On the back, in his father’s handwriting, were six words.

Take care of what matters most.

Luke stared.

His father had written it after the wedding.

Claire looked at him.

“Your mom hated that note.”

“How do you know?”

“She told me your dad was sentimental when he got sick. She said he didn’t understand what the farm meant anymore.”

Luke sat quietly.

His father had died two years earlier after a long illness.

During his final months, he had told Luke several times not to become trapped by the property.

Luke had assumed he meant debt.

Now the words sounded different.

Take care of what matters most.

Not what belonged to the family.

Not what had been passed down.

What mattered.

Luke placed the photograph on the motel nightstand.

“I spent my whole life thinking keeping that farm meant honoring him.”

Claire touched the scorched corner.

“Maybe letting it control everyone is the opposite.”

That afternoon Luke called a real estate agent.

Not to sell.

Not yet.

He simply wanted to know what the property was worth.

For the first time, the farm became something he could evaluate instead of something he had to obey.
