What Evelyn Gave Back

Chapter 19 - What Evelyn Gave Back

Over the next six months, Evelyn did what Claire had asked.

She corrected the rumors.

Not vaguely.

Specifically.

At church she told Mrs. Carter that Claire had never tried to take the farm.

She told Luke’s former coach that Luke was not suffering from combat-related instability.

She admitted to family members that the financial dispute resulted from her own decisions.

She sold her jewelry, a second vehicle, and several pieces of antique furniture to begin repaying the money taken from Luke and Claire.

The prosecutor ultimately allowed a restitution agreement tied to a fraud plea rather than seeking incarceration, partly because the documents had not been filed and because Evelyn cooperated fully.

She moved into a small apartment near her sister.

The farm loan was invalidated after the forged signatures were proven.

Luke sold the north field voluntarily.

Not because Evelyn demanded it.

Because he chose to.

The sale cleared the remaining legitimate farm debt and left enough money to repair the old cabin.

One afternoon, Claire found Luke standing in the kitchen where the iron had once hovered over their wedding photograph.

He was sanding the table.

“You’re keeping it?” she asked.

“The table?”

“Yes.”

Luke smiled.

“I thought about burning it.”

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“Too dramatic?”

“A little.”

He ran his hand across the rough wood.

“I think I’d rather make new memories on it.”

Claire placed Grace in her high chair nearby.

The baby slapped both hands against the tray.

Luke laughed.

The sound echoed through the same room that had once held so much fear.

Wood could remember damage.

May you like

People could too.

That did not mean either one had to remain broken.
