Evelyn Finally Tells the Whole Truth

Chapter 16 - Evelyn Finally Tells the Whole Truth
Evelyn left for Ohio the next morning, but she returned a week later for a meeting at Dana’s office.
Her attorney sat beside her.
Luke and Claire sat across the table.
Nobody raised a voice.
That made the truth harder to escape.
Evelyn admitted taking money from the baby account.
She admitted forging Luke’s signature on the farm loan.
She admitted hiding his letters.
She admitted telling Claire that Luke wanted a separation.
She admitted drafting the guardianship paperwork.
Then Dana asked the question Claire had been waiting for.
“Why the guardianship?”
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“If Luke came home and decided to sell the farm, I thought the baby might make him stay.”
Claire stared at her.
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“I thought if I had some legal influence over the child, I could keep the family together.”
“You were willing to take my daughter away from me,” Claire said.
“No.”
“That is exactly what those papers were for.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I told myself I would never actually do it.”
Claire’s expression did not change.
“But you prepared to.”
Evelyn nodded.
That single nod ended every excuse.
Her attorney explained the likely consequences: restitution, civil liability, possible criminal charges depending on the prosecutor’s decision.
Luke looked at his mother.
“Why didn’t you ask me for help?”
“Because I thought you would say no.”
“I might have.”
Evelyn wiped her face.
“That’s why.”
Luke understood then.

Control had not been Evelyn’s last resort.
It had been her way of avoiding the possibility that another adult might make a choice she did not like.
