The Story Evelyn Told the Town

Chapter 12 - The Story Evelyn Told the Town
By Friday, half the town had heard a version of the story.
It was not the true one.
According to Evelyn, Claire had manipulated Luke into accusing his own mother of theft because she wanted the farm.
According to Evelyn, Luke was suffering from stress after deployment.
According to Evelyn, Claire had always planned to sell the property and move away.
The rumor reached Luke through a former high school coach.
Claire heard it from the woman who cut her hair.
Neither of them responded online.
Neither of them posted screenshots.
Dana had advised them to stay quiet while the investigation moved forward.
That silence gave the rumor room to grow.
On Sunday morning, Claire told Luke she wanted to attend church.
“You don’t have to prove anything,” he said.
“I’m not going to prove anything.”
She buttoned her coat over her belly.
“I’m going because I’m tired of being pushed out of my own life.”
They arrived ten minutes early.
Conversations softened when they entered.
Evelyn was already seated near the front.
She did not turn around.
After the service, an older woman named Mrs. Carter approached Claire near the fellowship hall.
“I heard you were trying to take Evelyn’s house.”
Claire smiled politely.
“The house belongs to Luke.”
Mrs. Carter blinked.
Luke stepped beside his wife.
“And Claire has never asked me to sell it.”
Several people nearby heard him.
Evelyn turned.
Luke did not raise his voice.
He did not list the forgeries.
He simply said, “There are legal matters being handled privately. Please don’t repeat things you cannot verify.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
For years Luke had protected his mother from embarrassment.
This time he protected the truth.

It was a small public moment.
For Claire, it felt enormous.
