Chapter 14 - The Last Password

Luke changed every password before sunrise.

Banking.

Email.

Insurance.

Phone accounts.

Cloud storage.

Family location services.

He removed Evelyn from every place she had quietly remained connected.

It was not dramatic.

There was no shouting.

Just a series of clicks.

But each one closed a door that should have been closed months earlier.

Claire watched from the hospital bed.

“You look relieved.”

“I am.”

“Also sad.”

Luke nodded.

“She used to be the person I called when I needed help.”

Claire did not answer.

She understood that grief.

The next afternoon, Dana called with another discovery.

The notary stamp on the loan documents had been used without authorization.

Evelyn’s church friend, Marjorie Lane, had reported her stamp missing months earlier but never filed a police report because she believed she had misplaced it.

Luke closed his eyes.

“So Mom stole it?”

“We cannot say that yet,” Dana replied. “But the forgery is becoming easier to prove.”

The financial investigation was no longer something Evelyn could explain as a misunderstanding.

Luke drove to the cabin after Claire was discharged.

His mother was packing.

Two suitcases sat by the front door.

“Where are you going?”

“To your aunt’s in Ohio.”

“You can’t disappear.”

“I’m not disappearing.”

“You were going to leave without telling me.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You already decided what I am.”

“No.”

Luke stepped closer.

“I finally stopped letting you decide what everyone else is.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

Luke hated that he still wanted to comfort her.

He hated even more that she knew it.

But he did not step forward.

Some boundaries feel cruel only because they are new.
