The Money That Disappeared

Chapter 04 - The Money That Disappeared

Luke called the bank from the kitchen.

Because he was the account holder, the representative confirmed enough to turn his suspicion into certainty.

Three transfers had been made during his deployment.

Claire had not authorized them.

Luke had not authorized them.

The bank would open a fraud investigation.

Evelyn listened from the porch, her face pale through the screen door.

When Luke ended the call, she came inside.

“I was going to replace it.”

Claire stared at her.

“So you did take it.”

Evelyn looked at Luke, not Claire.

“The farm taxes were behind. Your father left problems you never knew about.”

“You could have called me.”

“You were deployed.”

“You forged my name.”

“I kept this place from being sold.”

Luke stood.

“This place was never more important than my wife.”

Evelyn flinched.

For years, Luke had allowed his mother to speak about the farm as if it were a person who had to be protected from outsiders. His father had bought the land before Luke was born. Every family argument ended with the same sentence from Evelyn: Your father sacrificed everything for this place.

Luke had believed that story.

Now he wondered what else had been hidden inside it.

Claire reached for one of the bank statements.

“I asked why the baby account was almost empty. She said you moved the money because you weren’t sure the marriage would last.”

Luke closed his eyes.

He remembered a video call from three months earlier.

Claire had seemed distant.

He had assumed pregnancy exhaustion.

She had asked, “Do you still want this?”

Luke thought she meant the nursery they were discussing.

He had laughed and said, “We’ll figure it out when I get home.”

Now he understood what she had actually been asking.

Do you still want our marriage?

His mother had stood between them without appearing on the screen.

Luke sat beside Claire.

“I never wanted out.”

“I know that now,” she said.

But the words did not erase the months she had spent believing otherwise.

Evelyn lowered herself into a chair.

“I made mistakes.”

Claire looked directly at her.

May you like

“No. A mistake is forgetting to mail a letter. You built a whole reality and made me live inside it.”

For the first time that day, Evelyn had no answer.
