THE PAPERS SHE TRIED TO DESTROY BEFORE HER SOLDIER SON CAME HOME

Chapter 01 - THE PAPERS SHE TRIED TO DESTROY BEFORE HER SOLDIER SON CAME HOME
## chapter 01 - The Soldier in the Doorway
The steam from the iron curled above the kitchen table when Staff Sergeant Luke Bennett stepped through the open door of his childhood cabin.
He had imagined his homecoming a hundred different ways during the flight back to Tennessee. Claire running into his arms. His mother pretending not to cry. His hand resting on the round belly he had only seen through frozen video calls and blurry photographs.
Instead, Claire sat rigid at the table, one hand pressed protectively over her eight-month pregnancy. Her face was wet with tears. Across from her, Luke’s mother, Evelyn, stood over a pile of legal papers with a black steam iron in her hand.
“Mom?”
Evelyn spun around.
The iron hovered above a photograph lying on top of the paperwork. It was Luke and Claire on their wedding day.
Luke dropped his duffel bag.
Claire looked at him as if she had been holding her breath for months.
“You came home,” she whispered.
Evelyn quickly lowered the iron to her side. “Luke, this isn’t what it looks like.”
Luke’s eyes moved from his mother to the papers. One page had Claire’s name typed across the top. Another contained a photocopy of his military identification. A third carried a signature that looked enough like his to fool a stranger.
But Luke knew his own handwriting.
“That isn’t my signature.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Claire swallowed hard. “She told me you signed them before you deployed.”
“Signed what?”
Claire pushed the top page toward him with trembling fingers.
Luke read the first paragraph.
Temporary financial authority.
Emergency guardianship.
Marital separation.
His heartbeat began pounding so hard he could hear it.
Evelyn reached for the papers.
Luke placed his hand over them first.
“Don’t touch anything.”
His mother stared at him.
The room went silent except for the soft hiss of the iron.
Luke looked at Claire again.
“How long has this been happening?”
Claire’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
May you like
Then she said the words that changed the meaning of his entire deployment.
“Since the week after you left.”
