Evelyn’s Version of Love

Chapter 08 - Evelyn’s Version of Love

Luke returned to the cabin alone.

Evelyn was sitting at the kitchen table.

The papers were gone because Luke had taken them to Dana.

The iron remained on the counter.

For some reason, seeing it there made the house feel unfamiliar.

“I talked to a lawyer,” he said.

Evelyn nodded once.

“I assumed you would.”

“Why were you planning to file before the baby was born?”

She looked toward the window.

“Because you weren’t thinking clearly.”

“I was on deployment, not unconscious.”

“You married fast.”

“We dated for three years.”

“She changed you.”

Luke almost laughed.

“That’s what people say when they don’t like that someone finally has boundaries.”

Evelyn stood.

“I gave everything to this family.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Her voice cracked for the first time.

She told him about the farm debt his father had hidden. Medical bills. Equipment loans. Property taxes. A refinancing attempt that failed after his father died.

“I was going to lose the land,” she said.

“So you stole from us?”

“I borrowed.”

“You forged my name.”

“I panicked.”

“And Claire?”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“She would have convinced you to sell.”

“She never asked me to sell.”

“She would have eventually.”

Luke stared at his mother.

There it was.

Not a fact.

A fear.

Evelyn had punished Claire for a future she invented.

“I thought if I could keep the finances under control until you came home, you would understand.”

“You told my pregnant wife I wanted a divorce.”

Evelyn looked down.

“I needed her to stop asking questions.”

Luke felt something inside him settle.

He had spent the entire day waiting for an explanation that would make his mother’s choices less deliberate.

He was not going to get one.

Evelyn had loved him.

She had also manipulated him.

Both things could be true.

And love did not cancel damage.
