The Locked Desk Upstairs

Chapter 03 - The Locked Desk Upstairs

Luke asked Evelyn to leave the kitchen.

She refused.

“This is my house too.”

“No,” Luke said. “Dad left the property to me. You have the right to live here, and I have always respected that. But right now I need you out of this room.”

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

For a second, Claire looked terrified that Luke might back down.

He did not.

“Please go sit on the porch.”

Evelyn walked outside without another word.

When the door closed, Claire began crying harder.

Luke knelt beside her chair.

“I’m sorry.”

She wiped her face. “For what?”

“For not seeing it.”

“You were overseas.”

“I still should have seen something.”

Claire shook her head.

“No. She made sure neither of us could see the other.”

That sentence stayed with him.

Together they went upstairs to the small office that had belonged to Luke’s father. Claire opened the bottom drawer of the old oak desk.

Inside were bank statements, military benefit notices, insurance letters, two canceled checks, and a folder labeled FAMILY CONTINGENCY.

Luke opened it.

The first page named Evelyn Bennett as emergency representative for financial matters.

The signature at the bottom was a copy of Luke’s.

The second document was worse.

It was a draft petition requesting temporary control of the property if Luke became “unavailable due to military service.”

Claire pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

“That’s not even the worst part.”

Luke read it twice.

The petition claimed Claire had shown signs of emotional instability and might be unable to care for her unborn child without supervision.

Luke stared at the page.

“She wrote that about you?”

“She made me believe you agreed with it.”

Luke sat down heavily in his father’s chair.

Claire lowered herself into the chair across from him.

For months she had been living in the same house with a woman who was quietly building a paper trail against her.

And Luke had been sending letters telling her everything was going to be okay.

He opened another envelope.

Inside was a notice from his bank.

Several large withdrawals had been made from the savings account he and Claire had planned to use for the baby.

The largest transfer was for nineteen thousand dollars.

Luke looked at the destination account.

The name printed beside it was familiar.

Bennett Farm Holdings.
