What Claire Had Been Told

Chapter 02 - What Claire Had Been Told

Luke switched off the iron and carried it to the counter.

He did it slowly because he needed something ordinary to keep his anger from becoming the loudest thing in the room.

Claire remained seated. Evelyn stood near the window with her arms folded, suddenly looking less like the commanding woman who had dominated the room and more like someone calculating how much Luke already knew.

“Start from the beginning,” Luke said.

Claire looked at Evelyn before she answered.

That glance hurt him more than the forged signature.

His wife was afraid to speak in front of his mother.

“After you deployed,” Claire began, “your mom said you had given her power of attorney over the house and your accounts. She said you wanted her to help because I was pregnant.”

Luke shook his head. “I gave a limited military power of attorney to you. Nobody else.”

“I know that now.”

Evelyn interrupted. “She was overwhelmed. I was protecting both of you.”

Claire’s voice became firmer. “You told me Luke didn’t trust me with money.”

Luke looked at his mother.

Evelyn did not deny it.

Claire continued.

“She said you had asked her to screen my mail because there were security issues. Then my bank card stopped working. Your letters stopped coming. She told me you were too busy to call.”

“I called every Sunday.”

“I know.”

Luke felt cold.

Claire reached beneath the paperwork and pulled out a bundle of envelopes tied with kitchen string.

Every one of them had Luke’s handwriting on the front.

Unopened.

His mother had kept them.

“I found these this morning in the locked desk upstairs,” Claire said. “That’s why we were arguing.”

Luke picked up the first envelope.

The postmark was five months old.

He had written that letter after a difficult week overseas, telling Claire he loved her, telling her he had already started looking at cribs online, telling her that being a father scared him but losing the chance to become one scared him more.

Claire had never read it.

Luke looked at Evelyn.

“You hid my letters?”

“I was trying to keep her calm.”

Claire gave a broken laugh. “You told me he was pulling away.”

Evelyn’s expression tightened.

“She was always crying. She was suspicious of everything.”

“Because you were lying to me,” Claire said.

Luke placed the letter back on the table.

He understood now that the forged paperwork was only the part he could see.

The real damage had been happening quietly for months.
