Claire’s Condition

Chapter 17 - Claire’s Condition
After the meeting, Evelyn asked to speak to Claire alone.
Luke looked at his wife.
Claire nodded.
He stepped into the hallway.
Evelyn sat across from Claire with her hands folded tightly.
“I am sorry.”
Claire waited.
No explanation followed.
No sentence beginning with but.
It was the first apology Evelyn had given that did not ask Claire to carry part of the blame.
“I believe you’re sorry,” Claire said.
Evelyn looked up hopefully.
“That doesn’t mean I trust you.”
The hope disappeared.
Claire continued.
“You will not have access to our accounts, our mail, our medical information, or our daughter’s records.”
Evelyn nodded.
“You will not stay in our home for now.”
Another nod.
“And you will never be alone with our daughter until Luke and I both decide we are comfortable.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled again.
“Do you think that will ever happen?”
Claire looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
The honesty was painful.
It was also fair.
Evelyn whispered, “What can I do?”
“Tell the truth where you lied.”
Claire leaned forward.
“You told people I was stealing your house. Correct it. You told people Luke was unstable. Correct it. You told people our marriage was failing. Correct it.”
Evelyn looked toward the hallway.
“And after that?”
“Live with the consequences.”
Claire rested a hand on her belly.
“Change because it’s right, not because you want access to the baby.”
Evelyn sat quietly for a long time.
Then she nodded.
“All right.”
Claire did not forgive her that day.
But for the first time, Evelyn accepted a boundary without trying to negotiate it.

That was not redemption.
It was the first step toward becoming capable of it.
