A Doctor Who Asked the Right Question

Chapter 06 - A Doctor Who Asked the Right Question

The specialist appointment lasted nearly two hours.

The baby was small but healthy.

Claire needed more rest, better nutrition, and weekly monitoring until delivery.

Luke sat beside her through every test.

When the doctor left the room, a nurse remained behind.

She looked at Claire.

“Can I ask you something privately?”

Luke immediately stood.

“I’ll wait outside.”

Claire caught his hand.

“No. He can stay.”

The nurse nodded.

“Has anyone been controlling your access to money, transportation, medical care, or communication?”

Claire went still.

Luke looked down.

The question was clinical. Calm. Routine.

It still felt like someone had opened a door they had both been afraid to touch.

“Yes,” Claire said.

The nurse gave her information for a local family advocacy center.

Luke felt ashamed that a stranger had recognized the pattern in one morning when he had missed it for months.

But Claire squeezed his hand.

“Don’t,” she said quietly.

“Don’t what?”

“Turn her behavior into another reason to blame yourself.”

He looked at her.

“You’re allowed to be angry at me too.”

“I am.”

Luke almost smiled.

“That’s fair.”

Claire’s expression softened.

“I’m angry you trusted your mother so completely that you never thought she might interfere. I’m angry you left all the house decisions to her because it was easier than arguing. I’m angry that when I sounded strange on calls, you told yourself I was tired.”

Luke nodded.

Every word landed where it belonged.

“I’ll earn that back.”

Claire studied him.

“Don’t make promises because you’re scared.”

“I’m not.”

He looked toward the monitor showing their daughter’s heartbeat.

“I’m making one because I finally understand what trust costs when you give it to the wrong person.”

Claire did not forgive him in that room.

Luke did not ask her to.

That was the first honest thing they did for their marriage.
