The Letter from Luke’s Father

Chapter 15 - The Letter from Luke’s Father

Before Evelyn left, she placed a metal box on the kitchen table.

“It was your father’s.”

Luke did not touch it.

“He wanted you to have it after he died,” she said.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“I wasn’t ready.”

Luke almost laughed at the familiar logic.

Her readiness had governed everyone’s truth.

Evelyn opened the box.

Inside were receipts, old photographs, a pocket watch, and several handwritten letters.

One envelope had Luke’s name on it.

He opened it after Evelyn went upstairs.

His father’s handwriting was shaky.

Son, if your mother ever tells you the farm is more important than the people you love, do not believe her. I let this place become the measure of whether I was a good husband and father. It was never supposed to be that.

Luke stopped reading.

Claire sat across from him.

He handed her the letter.

His father described years of arguments with Evelyn over debt, pride, and appearances. He admitted he had hidden financial problems because he was ashamed.

Then came the line Luke read three times.

Your mother is afraid of losing things because she thinks loss means failure. Fear can make good people do terrible damage if nobody tells them no.

Luke folded the letter carefully.

For the first time, he understood that his father had seen the pattern.

He had simply run out of time to stop it.

Claire placed the letter beside their scorched wedding photograph.

“Your dad was trying to warn you.”

Luke nodded.

“And I thought he was talking about money.”

“He was.”

Claire looked at him.

“He just wasn’t only talking about money.”
