Nora Reed recognized Adrian the moment Lucas brought him home.
Her face went pale.
“You need to leave.”
Adrian told her he had only learned about Lucas that afternoon.
Nora laughed bitterly.
“Emily tried to tell you.”
She revealed that Emily had written Adrian for years. She called his office, contacted his foundation, and even went to the Vale estate while seven months pregnant.
Adrian insisted he had received only one letter—a goodbye telling him not to search for her.
Nora disappeared inside and returned with a cardboard box filled with dozens of unopened envelopes.
Every one was addressed to Adrian.
Every one had been returned.
On top was a photograph of a pregnant Emily.
On the back she had written:
Adrian, someday I hope you learn that I never left you.
May you like
For eleven years, Adrian had believed Emily abandoned him.
Now he began to understand that someone had made sure they stayed apart.
