Chapter 19 - The Birthday Message
On Lucas’s eleventh birthday, Nora revealed one final video from Emily.
“Happy birthday, baby,” Emily said from the screen.
She told stories about the day he was born.
Then she laughed and said that if Adrian was somehow sitting beside him, he still owed her twenty dollars from a bet that their first child would be a girl.
Lucas immediately stole twenty dollars from Adrian’s wallet.
“You owe Mom.”
Then Emily’s message became serious.
“Families can break,” she said.
“Sometimes fear breaks them. Sometimes pride.”
“But broken doesn’t mean finished.”
She told Lucas to choose people who showed up and people brave enough to tell the truth.
And she reminded him that forgiveness was a gift.
Never a debt.
The next morning, Lucas placed the twenty-dollar bill beneath Emily’s photograph at the community field.
