Richard stood beside a black sedan and asked Lucas to talk.
Lucas agreed.
“You have Adrian’s stubbornness,” Richard said.
“I have my mom’s.”
Lucas asked the question no powerful adult had ever dared ask Richard directly.
“Why did you hurt her?”
Richard said he believed Adrian’s future required sacrifice.
“My mom was the sacrifice?”
Richard had no answer.
“And I was too?”
Again, silence.
Adrian arrived and confronted his father.
But Lucas stepped between them.
“I’m not a company,” he said.
“And I’m not something you can win.”
That night, Lucas overheard Nora discussing their financial problems.
The landlord wanted them gone because of the reporters.
Nora was losing work.
Adrian had lost his company.
Lucas began believing everyone’s life had been better before he appeared.
