The Second Betrayal

Chapter 08 - The Second Betrayal

Ethan found Ray at his motorcycle shop.

"Tell me you didn't call Sarah's lawyer."

Ray didn't answer quickly enough.

Ethan's disappointment was worse than anger.

"Why?"

Ray shut the garage door.

"Because Dominic called me first."

Lily stared at him.

"You've been talking to him?"

"Listen to me. He's scared."

"Good," Ethan said.

"No. You don't understand. A scared Dominic is dangerous."

Ray admitted Dominic had offered him money.

A lot of money.

All Ray had to do was convince Ethan to walk away.

Lily laughed bitterly.

"And what did you say?"

Ray opened a drawer.

Inside was an envelope containing fifty thousand dollars.

Lily's face fell.

Ethan stepped backward.

Ray removed the cash and threw it onto the workbench.

"I took it."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Then Ray continued.

"Because now we have proof."

Ray had recorded the entire conversation.

Dominic's voice was unmistakable.

On the recording, he never directly confessed to separating Ethan and Sarah.

But he said enough.

"That girl should have stayed invisible, just like her mother."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

Ethan reached for her hand instinctively.

This time, she didn't pull away.

Ray looked at Ethan.

"I failed you once. I'm not doing it again."

But the recording contained one final warning.

Dominic claimed Sarah had left behind a secret.

And if Lily discovered it, she might never forgive her mother.
