The Grave by the Ocean

Chapter 14 - The Grave by the Ocean

Sarah had chosen a small cemetery overlooking the sea.

Lily brought white flowers.

Ethan brought the old photograph.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Ethan knelt beside the headstone.

"You should've told me," he whispered.

There was anger in his voice.

And love.

And twenty-four years of grief.

Lily stood beside him.

"I've been angry at her too."

"You have every right."

"But I think she spent her whole life punishing herself."

Ethan placed the photograph beside the flowers.

"No more punishment."

He stood.

Lily looked at him.

"I don't know how to have a father."

Ethan gave a sad smile.

"I don't know how to be one."

That made her laugh through her tears.

"That's not very reassuring."

"Maybe we learn."

"Slowly?"

"Very slowly."

Lily nodded.

Then she hugged him.

It lasted only a few seconds.

But for Ethan, it was enough.

Until Lily's phone rang.

Her attorney was calling.

Dominic's legal team had produced a new will supposedly signed by Sarah.

According to the document, Sarah had left everything to Dominic.

Including the property.

Including the house.

If the will was real, Lily could lose everything her mother had tried to recover.

And this time, the signature looked genuine.
