Chapter 01 - She Put an Old Photograph on a Biker’s Table—Then He Realized Who She Was

## chapter 01 - The Photograph on the Table

The late-afternoon sun spilled gold across the wooden deck of the small café overlooking the Pacific. Ethan Cole had come there for silence.

At forty-eight, he had learned not to ask life for too much.

A cold drink. An empty road. His motorcycle waiting in the parking lot.

Across from him sat Ray Mercer, the bald, broad-shouldered friend who had ridden beside Ethan for almost twenty years.

Then the young woman appeared.

She couldn't have been more than twenty-four. Brown hair brushed her shoulders, and there was something nervous in the way she kept pressing her fingers against the pocket of her denim shorts.

"Are you Ethan Cole?"

Ethan slowly looked up.

"Depends who's asking."

The girl swallowed.

"My name is Lily."

She pulled an old photograph from her pocket and placed it on the wooden table.

Ethan stopped breathing.

The picture had faded at the edges, but there was no mistaking the two people standing beside an old blue motorcycle.

One was Ethan, nearly twenty-five years younger.

The woman beside him was laughing into the camera.

Sarah Mitchell.

The only woman Ethan had ever planned to marry.

The woman who had disappeared from his life without saying goodbye.

Ray leaned closer.

"Where did you get that?"

Lily ignored him.

Her eyes remained fixed on Ethan.

"My mother gave it to me three days before she died."

Ethan's fingers trembled as they touched the edge of the photograph.

"Your mother?"

Lily nodded.

Then she said the words that turned twenty-four years of Ethan's life upside down.

"Her name was Sarah Mitchell."

May you like

Ethan stared at the young woman.

And suddenly, he saw Sarah's eyes looking back at him.
