Sarah's Place

Chapter 17 - Sarah's Place
The coastal land had been empty for years.
Lily walked across it with Ethan and Ray.
"I don't want another mansion here."
"Good," Ethan said. "I hate mowing lawns."
Lily rolled her eyes.
She explained her idea.
Sarah had spent years quietly helping women and families escaping controlling relationships.
Lily wanted to continue that work.
Part of the property would become transitional housing.
Another section would become a community center offering legal assistance and counseling.
Ethan stared at her.
"That's a big project."
"Scared?"
"Terrified."
"Good."
Ray laughed.
For the next year, they worked.
Ethan repaired old buildings.
Ray organized volunteers from motorcycle clubs across California.
Lily handled the nonprofit.
Slowly, something unexpected happened.
They became a family.
Not the family Sarah had once imagined.
Not the childhood Lily had lost.
Something new.
One evening, while painting a porch railing, Lily looked at Ethan.
"You know my birthday is next week."
Ethan nearly dropped the brush.
"I know."
"How?"
"I've missed twenty-four. I'm not missing twenty-five."
Lily smiled.

One connected to a promise Sarah made decades earlier.
