The Table by the Ocean

Chapter 20 - The Table by the Ocean

Two years later, Ethan sat at the same seaside café where everything had begun.

Ray was across from him.

"You realize you're getting sentimental in your old age," Ray said.

"Shut up."

A woman approached their table.

Ethan looked up.

Lily was smiling.

She wasn't alone.

Beside her stood her fiancé, Daniel, the attorney who had helped the nonprofit secure its first major grant.

Lily sat beside Ethan.

"We picked a wedding date."

Ethan nearly choked on his drink.

Ray laughed.

"When?"

"October."

Ethan smiled.

Then Lily reached into her bag.

For one terrible second, Ethan thought she had another family secret.

Instead, she placed a photograph on the table.

It showed the three of them standing outside Sarah's Place on opening day.

"Mom gave me the first photograph that brought me here," Lily said.

"I thought we needed a new one."

Ethan looked at the picture.

Twenty-four years had been stolen from them.

There was no happy ending powerful enough to erase that truth.

But Ethan had learned that happiness didn't come from pretending the past never happened.

It came from refusing to let the past steal tomorrow too.

At Lily's wedding, Ethan walked his daughter down the aisle.

Before they entered, Lily stopped.

"I used to think I grew up without a father."

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"Let me finish."

She squeezed his hand.

"I lost twenty-four years with my dad. But I found him in time for the rest of my life."

Ethan could no longer speak.

So he simply kissed her forehead.

Then the doors opened.

Outside, the Pacific sun was setting, bathing the coast in the same golden light that had surrounded a frightened young woman the day she placed an old photograph on a biker's table.

Only this time, nobody was walking away.

This time, a father and daughter stepped forward together.

May you like

And somewhere in the sound of the ocean, Lily liked to believe Sarah was finally at peace.

THE END
