The Man Behind the Lie

Chapter 07 - The Man Behind the Lie
Dominic Vale was seventy-four and lived in a mansion overlooking Monterey Bay.
Time had weakened his body, but apparently not his influence.
Lily wanted to confront him immediately.
Ethan refused.
"Men like Dominic don't confess because you knock politely on their door."
"Then what do we do?"
"We find out why."
The answer came from Sarah's attorney.
Sarah's father had once owned valuable coastal property.
After his death, the land passed to Sarah.
But Sarah signed it away.
To Dominic.
The date on the transfer documents was two months after Lily was born.
Ethan studied the signature.
"Sarah would never have done this willingly."
The attorney agreed.
That land was now worth more than twelve million dollars.
Suddenly, Dominic's motives became clearer.
If Sarah married Ethan, he could have helped her fight.
If Ethan knew about Lily, he might have challenged Dominic's control over the family.
So Dominic separated them.
Then he isolated Sarah.
But there was one problem.
Sarah's attorney revealed that she had quietly filed a new claim before her death.
She intended to recover the property.
And after Sarah died, the legal claim passed to her only child.
Lily.
"Dominic knows you're looking into this," the attorney warned.
"How?"
The man looked uncomfortable.
"Because someone called my office yesterday asking about you."
Lily turned toward Ethan.
"Who?"
May you like
The attorney swallowed.
"Ray Mercer."
