What Sabrina Hadn’t Told Her

Chapter 08 - What Sabrina Hadn’t Told Her
At the police station, Claire sat beneath fluorescent lights while a detective photographed the small cut near her temple.
Across the hall, Ethan was being questioned.
Sabrina sat three chairs away.
Neither woman spoke.
At 3:12 a.m., Officer Reyes approached Claire.
“We need to clarify something.”
Claire looked up.
“Ethan says the financial transfers were your idea.”
“I expected that.”
“He also says Sabrina can prove it.”
Claire turned toward Sabrina.
Sabrina closed her eyes.
Claire felt the room tilt.
“What did you sign?”
Sabrina whispered, “A statement.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“About what?”
Sabrina began crying.
Quietly.
No performance.
No dramatic collapse.
Just shame.
“Ethan told me regulators were asking questions. He said we needed internal records showing you directed the transfers.”
Claire stood.
“You signed a statement saying I ordered the fraud?”
“I believed him.”
“No. You wanted to believe him.”
Sabrina looked up.
Claire hated the truth in her own words.
Officer Reyes stepped between them.
“There’s more.”
He handed Claire a copy of the statement.
At the bottom was Sabrina’s signature.
Above it were details only someone inside the company would know.
Claire’s name appeared eighteen times.
Ethan’s appeared twice.
Margaret arrived twenty minutes later.
She read the statement and exhaled slowly.
“This is bad.”
Claire stared through the interview room window.
“How bad?”
“If the financial records match this narrative, very.”
Sabrina stood in the doorway.
“I’ll tell them I lied.”
Margaret looked at her.
“That helps. But prosecutors will ask why.”
Sabrina swallowed.
Claire knew the answer before she said it.
“Because she loved him.”
Sabrina’s face crumpled.
Claire turned away.
She did not want to feel sympathy.
But betrayal was not simple anymore.
Ethan had used love like currency.
He had spent Claire’s trust.
He had spent Sabrina’s ambition.
He had spent both women against each other.
Margaret closed the file.
“There is one way to break his story.”
Claire looked at her.
“We prove the plan existed before Sabrina signed that statement.”
Claire thought of the fake psychiatric evaluation.
“It does.”
Margaret nodded.
“Then we find out who created it.”
The doctor’s name on the report was Dr. Peter Lang.
Claire had never met him.
But Ethan had.
