The Night Everything Broke

Chapter 07 - The Night Everything Broke
Margaret told Claire to leave the house.
Immediately.
“Do not confront him again,” she said. “Do not stay alone with him.”
Claire packed a suitcase.
She never got it out the door.
Ethan came home early.
He saw the suitcase in the hallway.
Then he saw Sabrina.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Sabrina stood beside the bedroom window, frozen.
Claire was near the dresser.
Ethan closed the door behind him.
“Well,” he said. “This is disappointing.”
Sabrina began to speak.
Ethan raised one hand.
“No. I’ve heard enough from you.”
Claire moved toward the door.
Ethan stepped in front of it.
“Move.”
“Where are you going?”
“Away from you.”
“Claire.”
“Move.”
He did not touch her.
He did not need to.
The threat was in the stillness.
Sabrina whispered, “Ethan, let her leave.”
He looked at Sabrina.
“You think she’s protecting you?”
Claire saw the shift.
Ethan began turning them against each other, as he always had.
“She knows what you signed,” he told Sabrina.
Sabrina’s face changed.
Claire looked at her.
“What is he talking about?”
Sabrina shook her head.
“Nothing.”
Ethan smiled.
“There it is.”
The room erupted into accusation.
Not violence.
Words.
Ugly, precise, devastating words.
Sabrina admitted she had signed false invoices.
Claire admitted she had copied company files.
Ethan admitted nothing.
Then the lamp fell.
No one was certain afterward who knocked it over.
The crash shattered the room’s fragile calm.
Claire stepped backward and struck the edge of the dresser, opening a small cut near her temple.
Sabrina cried out.
Ethan reached toward Claire.
She recoiled.
That was when Sabrina pulled out her phone.
“I called the police,” she said.
Ethan turned.
But Claire already had her own phone in her hand.
“No,” she said.
Everyone looked at her.
“I did.”
Outside, sirens rose through the rain.
And Ethan’s confidence finally cracked.
May you like
Not because the police were coming.
Because Claire had stopped being afraid of what he might say about her.
