Sabrina’s Name on the Deed

Chapter 11 - Sabrina’s Name on the Deed
Claire confronted Sabrina in the hallway outside the district attorney’s office.
“You own my mother’s house?”
Sabrina stared at her.
“What?”
“The lake house.”
“I don’t own any lake house.”
Claire shoved the printout toward her.
Sabrina read it twice.
Her face went white.
“I’ve never seen this company.”
“Your name is the registered owner.”
“No.”
Margaret stepped between them.
“Think carefully. Did Ethan ever ask you to sign documents for a holding company?”
Sabrina’s eyes widened.
“Yes.”
Claire’s anger surged.
“When?”
“Last summer. He said it was for an employee investment plan.”
Claire turned away.
Sabrina followed.
“I didn’t know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Sabrina stopped.
Claire expected excuses.
Instead, Sabrina said, “You’re right.”
Claire looked at her.
“I wanted the life he promised me so badly that I stopped asking who would have to lose theirs for me to get it.”
The honesty cut through Claire’s anger.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But truth.
Sabrina agreed to cooperate fully.
She handed investigators passwords, schedules, travel records, and every company device she still possessed.
The lake house had been transferred through three shell companies.
Ethan had sold it to himself.
Then he had placed Sabrina’s name on the final ownership record.
A second fall person.
Claire almost admired the symmetry.
He had trapped both women.
Just in different ways.
But investigators found something Ethan had not expected.
The final deed transfer required a witness.
The witness signature belonged to Nora.
Claire stared at the page.
Again.
Her sister.
Again.
Nora denied signing it.
This time, Claire believed her.
The signature was too perfect.
Margaret looked at the document under magnification.
“It’s copied.”
Claire sat back.
For the first time, a small opening appeared.
If Ethan had forged Nora’s signature, investigators could prove a pattern.
And if they proved a pattern, Claire’s signatures became easier to challenge.
The case was changing.
Then Ethan made his next move.
At 6:00 p.m., every major local news outlet received an anonymous packet.
The headline appeared online twenty minutes later.

Claire’s photograph was beneath it.

By sunset, strangers knew her name.
By midnight, they believed Ethan’s version.
