The Choice Sabrina Made

Chapter 15 - The Choice Sabrina Made
Sabrina wanted to disappear.
Claire could see it.
The old instinct.
Run.
Hide.
Let someone stronger decide what happened next.
Claire understood because she had lived inside that instinct too.
Instead of telling Sabrina to be brave, she sat beside her.
“You don’t owe me courage,” Claire said.
Sabrina looked at her.
“I helped him hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“I could have stopped sooner.”
“Yes.”
“You hate me.”
Claire thought about it.
“I hated who I thought you were.”
“And now?”
“Now I think you’re someone who did terrible things because you wanted to believe a lie.”
Sabrina’s eyes filled.
“That’s not much better.”
“No.”
They both laughed.
A tired, broken laugh.
Then Claire took the photographs.
“We give these to the police.”
Sabrina nodded.
It was not a heroic moment.
There was no swelling music.
No sudden transformation.
Just one frightened woman choosing not to obey fear.
The investigation expanded.
Ethan’s contact with witnesses became part of the case.
His bail conditions were tightened.
His company board suspended him.
For the first time, his world began closing around him.
But Claire’s did not magically reopen.
Her studio remained nearly empty.
Clients still avoided her.
The lake house was tied up in litigation.
Her bank accounts were frozen pending investigation.
One afternoon, Claire sat alone in the studio she might lose.
Nora arrived carrying two coffees.
Claire almost told her to leave.
Instead, she let her sit.
“I sold my condo,” Nora said.
Claire stared at her.
“What?”
“I sold it.”
“Why?”
“To help pay your legal fees.”
Claire stood.
“No.”
“It’s done.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Nora’s voice cracked.
“Because I spent my whole life thinking protecting you meant making decisions for you.”
Claire looked away.
“And now?”
“Now I’m trying to stand beside you instead.”
Claire cried then.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because forgiveness sometimes begins long before trust returns.
That evening, Margaret called.
The grand jury had voted.
Ethan Whitmore was going to be indicted.
But the charges included something Claire had not expected.
May you like
Conspiracy.
And her name was still listed as a possible co-conspirator.
