Claire on the Other Side of the Table

Chapter 16 - Claire on the Other Side of the Table

Claire sat before the grand jury three days later.

She wore a navy suit.

No jewelry.

No wedding ring.

Margaret sat outside.

Inside, Claire was alone.

The prosecutor asked about the shell companies.

Claire answered.

The forged signatures.

She answered.

The money that passed through her studio.

She answered.

Then came the question she feared.

“Mrs. Whitmore, did you personally benefit from funds later identified as fraudulent?”

Claire paused.

“Yes.”

The room changed.

“How?”

“Mortgage payments. Travel. Business expenses. Investments.”

“Did you know the source?”

“No.”

“Can you prove that?”

Claire looked at the jurors.

“No.”

The truth felt dangerous.

She told it anyway.

For two hours, Claire described her marriage without turning herself into a saint.

She admitted she ignored red flags.

She admitted she enjoyed the lifestyle.

She admitted that when Ethan handled money, she often chose not to ask questions because trust was easier.

“I should have asked,” she said. “But not asking is not the same as agreeing.”

One juror leaned forward.

“Why didn’t you leave sooner?”

Claire thought of all the people reading about her online.

All the strangers who believed leaving was a door anyone could simply open.

“Because by the time I knew I needed to leave, I no longer knew which parts of my life actually belonged to me.”

No one spoke.

When Claire walked out, Margaret was waiting.

“What happened?”

“I told the truth.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“That’s usually inconvenient.”

Two days later, prosecutors announced Claire would not be charged.

The news spread quickly.

Some outlets corrected their stories.

Others did not.

But Claire no longer measured her life by headlines.

Ethan was charged with fraud, forgery, witness intimidation, and conspiracy.

Peter Lang agreed to testify.

Jonathan Price returned to Vermont.

Evelyn Grant sent Claire a handwritten note.

You broke the pattern.

Claire kept it beside her bed.

Then Ethan requested a meeting.

Not through lawyers.

Through the jail chaplain.

One meeting.

No deal.

No recording.

Claire’s first instinct was no.

Then she realized something.

She wanted to see what remained of him when he could no longer control the room.

So she went.
