Sabrina Changed Sides

Chapter 06 - Sabrina Changed Sides

Sabrina disappeared for three days.

She did not answer calls.

She did not go to work.

Ethan told everyone at the office that she had taken emergency leave.

Claire assumed the worst.

On the fourth night, Sabrina arrived at Claire’s studio.

She looked exhausted.

“I need somewhere Ethan won’t look.”

Claire locked the door behind her.

“You slept with my husband.”

Sabrina flinched.

“I know.”

“You helped him move money.”

“I know.”

“You lied to my face for almost two years.”

“I know.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“So tell me why I should help you.”

Sabrina reached into her bag.

Not for documents.

For a key.

“I have access to a storage unit.”

Claire stared at it.

“What’s inside?”

“Everything he thought he deleted.”

Sabrina explained that Ethan kept archived company files off-site. Early contracts. Backup drives. Old correspondence. Material he could use against partners if they ever turned on him.

“He trusted me to organize it,” Sabrina said. “He didn’t think I would remember what was there.”

Claire watched her carefully.

“Why are you doing this?”

Sabrina looked down.

“Because I finally understood I was never going to become you.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“That’s what he promised?”

Sabrina nodded.

“He said you were unstable. He said you were using him. He said once the company was safe, he’d leave you.”

Claire almost smiled at the cruelty of it.

“He told me you were after his money.”

Sabrina looked up.

For a moment, the two women saw the same man from opposite sides of the same lie.

Neither felt victorious.

They went to the storage unit the next morning.

Inside were eight filing cabinets and four locked plastic cases.

The third cabinet contained old loan files.

The fourth contained corporate records.

The fifth contained a sealed envelope with Claire’s name.

She opened it.

Inside was a copy of a psychiatric evaluation.

Her name was printed at the top.

The report claimed Claire suffered from paranoia, impulsive behavior, and memory disturbances.

It was signed by a doctor she had never met.

Sabrina went pale.

“He was going to say you were mentally unstable.”

Claire looked at the date.

The document had been prepared eleven months earlier.

Long before she discovered the affair.

Long before she found the second phone.

Ethan had not created an escape plan after Claire became suspicious.

He had been planning her downfall for almost a year.
