The Woman in the Purple Dress

Chapter 03 - The Woman in the Purple Dress

Ethan did not drive to the office.

He drove across town to the Halston Hotel.

Claire parked half a block away and watched him enter through the side doors.

For thirty minutes, she did nothing.

Then she walked inside.

She expected to find a mistress.

What she found was Sabrina.

Claire recognized her immediately.

Sabrina Cole had been Ethan’s executive assistant for almost two years. She was twenty-nine, polished, efficient, and always careful around Claire.

Too careful, Claire now realized.

Sabrina stepped out of the elevator wearing a dark purple dress and carrying a slim leather folder.

Ethan followed.

He touched her lower back.

The gesture lasted less than a second.

It was enough.

Claire nearly walked toward them.

Instead, she turned away.

At home that night, she poured herself a glass of water and stared at the wedding ring on her finger.

She expected rage.

What came was humiliation.

She remembered every dinner where Sabrina had smiled across the table.

Every company Christmas party.

Every time Ethan had told Claire she was imagining things when he came home late.

But beneath the humiliation, something colder was growing.

The message on the second phone had not sounded romantic.

You promised her signature would be enough.

Claire contacted Sabrina the next morning from a number Ethan did not know.

I know about the hotel. We need to talk.

Sabrina replied seven minutes later.

Do not tell Ethan.

They met at a coffee shop near the courthouse.

Sabrina arrived wearing sunglasses, though the day was cloudy.

“You think I’m sleeping with your husband,” she said.

Claire held her gaze.

“Aren’t you?”

Sabrina removed the sunglasses.

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than Claire expected.

Then Sabrina leaned forward.

“But that isn’t the worst thing he’s done.”

She opened the leather folder.

Inside were copies of loan applications, property transfers, and corporate documents.

Claire saw her own name again and again.

Her signature appeared at the bottom of pages she had never seen.

“I thought you knew,” Sabrina said. “He told me you agreed to all of it.”

Claire’s hands went cold.

“What did I agree to?”

Sabrina swallowed.

“To moving money through your mother’s property.”

Claire looked up sharply.

Sabrina’s eyes were wet now.

“He said it was temporary. He said the company needed liquidity.”

“How much?”

Sabrina hesitated.

Claire leaned closer.

“How much, Sabrina?”

“Almost three million dollars.”

The café seemed to disappear around them.

May you like

Then Sabrina said the sentence Claire would remember for the rest of her life.

“And Claire… your name is the only one on the documents that could send someone to prison.”
