The Marriage He Built Around Her

Chapter 04 - The Marriage He Built Around Her

Claire did not sleep that night.

She sat on the floor of her home office surrounded by paperwork and tried to understand how six years of marriage had been converted into a financial weapon.

Ethan had not only forged her name.

He had built a story.

A believable one.

The company records made Claire look like the person moving money between shell entities. Her design studio had been used to invoice Whitmore Development for work that had never happened. Payments entered Claire’s business account, then disappeared days later into investments controlled by Ethan.

It was elegant.

It was also terrifying.

When Ethan came home after midnight, Claire was in bed pretending to sleep.

He slipped beneath the covers and placed one hand on her shoulder.

“You awake?”

Claire kept her breathing slow.

Ethan kissed the back of her head.

“I love you.”

She nearly laughed.

Instead, she waited until he fell asleep.

Then she went downstairs and photographed every file in his locked study.

The next morning, Claire called a lawyer.

Not a divorce lawyer.

A criminal defense attorney.

Margaret Shaw was sixty-two, sharp-eyed, and unimpressed by wealthy men.

After reviewing the first set of documents, she looked at Claire for a long time.

“Your husband is either very careless,” Margaret said, “or very confident you’ll take the fall.”

Claire folded her arms.

“He’s never careless.”

Margaret nodded.

“Then assume he has a plan for you.”

The sentence followed Claire home.

That evening, Ethan cooked pasta.

He poured wine.

He played music from their first vacation together.

Then, halfway through dinner, he asked a question that made Claire set down her fork.

“Have you been in my office?”

She looked at him.

“No.”

Ethan smiled.

“Good.”

Nothing in his face changed.

But later, when Claire walked upstairs, she discovered the bedroom door was open.

Her desk drawers had been searched.

The folder she had hidden beneath winter blankets was gone.

On her pillow sat the black second phone.

Its screen was lit.

There was a new message.

Not from Sabrina.

May you like

From Ethan.

I know.
