The Woman Everyone Blamed

Chapter 12 - The Woman Everyone Blamed

The internet decided Claire was guilty before breakfast.

Commenters called her greedy.

Manipulative.

Unstable.

A gold digger who had framed her successful husband after discovering his affair.

One photograph from the police scene went viral.

Claire standing calmly on the phone.

Ethan restrained behind her.

Sabrina crying on the floor.

People saw a villain because calm looked cruel in a single frozen image.

No one saw the six years before it.

Claire’s design clients began canceling.

A magazine postponed a feature.

Her studio landlord received anonymous complaints.

Someone spray-painted LIAR across the back entrance.

Nora wanted Claire to issue a public statement.

Margaret said no.

“Anything you say can become evidence.”

“So I do nothing?”

“You survive.”

Claire hated that word.

Survive.

It sounded passive.

Like waiting.

She had spent too much of her marriage waiting.

Then a former employee named Marcus Hale called.

He had worked for Whitmore Development three years earlier.

“I saw the news,” he told Claire. “Ethan did this before.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“To who?”

“A partner named Jonathan Price.”

Claire remembered Jonathan.

He had abruptly left the company after accusations of embezzlement.

Ethan had called him unstable.

Dangerous.

Disloyal.

The same language.

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Disappeared?”

“Not like that,” Marcus said quickly. “He moved. Changed careers. Lost everything.”

Claire found Jonathan living in Vermont.

He refused her first call.

And her second.

On the third, he answered.

“I have nothing to say about Ethan Whitmore.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“He’s doing to me what he did to you.”

Silence.

Then Jonathan said, “No. He’s doing it better.”

Claire sat down.

“What do you mean?”

“He learned from the mistakes he made with me.”

Jonathan agreed to meet.

But before he hung up, he gave Claire one warning.

“If Ethan thinks you can prove a pattern, he’ll stop trying to destroy your reputation.”

“What will he do instead?”

May you like

Jonathan’s voice went quiet.

“He’ll offer to save you.”
