The Money That Vanished

Chapter 06 - The Money That Vanished
The trust should have changed Claire's life.
It could have paid for college.
It could have kept Anne from working double shifts at a hotel laundry when Claire was ten.
It could have paid the hospital bills that followed Anne until the year she died.
Instead, someone had emptied it.
Claire stared at the withdrawal form until the letters blurred.
Daniel sat across from her in the bank's private meeting room.
"Claire, we need to take this to an attorney."
She laughed bitterly.
"Another attorney?"
"One who isn't Victor Hale."
Marlene placed a hand on Claire's shoulder.
"Your mother never knew about the trust."
Claire looked up.
"How do you know?"
"Because she borrowed money from me for your community college tuition. She cried when she asked."
That hurt in a new place.
Claire closed the file.
Daniel leaned forward.
"My father must have found out."
"Then why didn't he fix it?"
"I don't know."
"That seems to be the family motto."
He took the insult without defending himself.
Good, Claire thought.
He had earned that much.
They hired a forensic accountant named Rachel Kim, a woman with an unsentimental voice and an office full of plants.
Rachel studied the documents for three hours.
Then she looked at Claire.
"This isn't just missing money."
"What is it?"
"Your trust bought property."
Claire frowned.
"What property?"
Rachel turned her laptop.
A parcel map appeared on the screen.
An old brick building near the James River.
Claire recognized it immediately.
The building had housed her mother's neighborhood after-school program for nearly twenty years.
Anne had run it with volunteers.
The city closed it after she died.
Victor Hale's foundation had purchased the property the following year.
Claire felt cold.
Rachel pointed to the transaction history.
"The trust bought the building in 1998. Someone transferred ownership through two shell companies. Eventually it landed with Hale Community Foundation."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"So Victor stole her trust and used it to buy the property Anne spent her life trying to save."
Rachel nodded.
"It appears that way."
Claire stood and walked to the window.
For years, she had believed her mother had failed to save that building because poor people often lost to rich people.
Now she understood something worse.
Her mother had paid for it.
She just never knew.
Behind her, Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
"My mother."
Claire turned.
Daniel answered.
Evelyn was crying so hard he could barely understand her.
When he finally did, his face drained of color.
May you like
Victor Hale had been at her house.
And Thomas Mercer's private journals were gone.
