Rebuilding

Chapter 17 - Rebuilding

They named it the Bennett-Mercer Community House.

Claire suggested the name.

Anne objected.

Evelyn cried.

Daniel pretended not to.

Thomas had never been Claire's father.

But he had been part of the reason she still had a future to reclaim.

Claire wanted that remembered.

Renovation took eight months.

Claire designed the plans herself.

Daniel, unemployed for longer than he liked to admit, handled contracts, permits, and legal paperwork.

He was good at it.

Annoyingly good.

One afternoon, they stood in the unfinished library.

Claire looked at him.

"You could start your own practice."

Daniel laughed.

"With what clients?"

"People who need someone who has learned the hard way what secrecy costs."

He looked at her.

"That is a very specific market."

"Bigger than you think."

He smiled.

Their relationship had changed.

There were no grand declarations.

No rushed reunion.

They had coffee.

Then dinner.

Then a walk.

Months later, Claire invited him to stay after everyone else left the building.

They sat on the floor among paint cans.

Daniel took a small box from his pocket.

Claire stared.

He immediately held up both hands.

"Not what you think."

Inside was her old engagement ring.

"I kept it because I didn't know what else to do with it."

Claire touched the box.

"I don't want the old promise."

"I know."

Daniel looked at her.

"I don't either."

He closed the box.

"I want the chance to make a new one someday."

Claire smiled.

"Someday?"

"Someday."

He put the ring away.

Claire leaned against his shoulder.

For the first time, she did not feel afraid of the future.

Then Anne entered carrying sandwiches.

She stopped.

"Oh."

Claire laughed.

Daniel stood too quickly.

Anne grinned.

"Apparently memory loss has not improved my timing."

All three laughed.

The sound filled the unfinished room.

Outside, children from the neighborhood watched through the windows, waiting for the building to open.

Claire looked around.

A life could be damaged.

A family could be lied to.

May you like

Years could be stolen.

But sometimes what remained was enough to build with.
