A Different Kind of Proposal

Chapter 19 - A Different Kind of Proposal

The community house opened on a Saturday in May.

No politicians were invited.

That was Claire's rule.

Children filled the new library.

Parents toured the computer lab.

Anne stood beneath a framed photograph of Thomas Mercer and Samuel Bennett, taken in college.

Evelyn placed flowers beneath it.

The two older women stood together.

Their friendship was not repaired.

Not completely.

But they were trying.

Sometimes that was more honest than pretending to be healed.

Daniel found Claire in the courtyard.

He wore no suit.

She liked him better that way.

"You have a minute?"

"Maybe."

He smiled.

"I'll take maybe."

They walked to the river.

Daniel stopped beneath an oak tree.

Claire folded her arms.

"You are acting suspicious."

"I have a history."

"True."

He reached into his pocket.

Claire stared.

"Daniel."

"Wait."

He did not kneel.

He did not open a ring box.

Instead, he handed her a folded piece of paper.

Claire opened it.

One sentence.

I promise to tell you the truth before I decide what you can survive.

Claire read it twice.

Then looked at him.

"That's your proposal?"

"No."

"Good."

He laughed.

"This is."

He took a breath.

"Claire Bennett, I don't want our old wedding back."

Her eyes filled.

"I want a marriage we haven't built yet. One where neither of us confuses protection with silence."

Claire whispered, "That's better."

"So?"

She stepped closer.

"So ask me."

Daniel smiled.

"Will you marry me?"

Claire looked toward the community house.

Anne stood at the window.

Evelyn beside her.

Marlene behind them.

All pretending not to watch.

Claire laughed.

"Yes."

Cheers erupted from inside.

Daniel looked toward the window.

"I thought they weren't watching."

Claire shook her head.

"You still have a lot to learn."

He kissed her gently.

No orchestra.

No photographers.

May you like

No perfect plan.

This time, Claire liked it better.
