The Man Outside the Door

Chapter 04 - The Man Outside the Door
Daniel moved before Claire did.
He placed himself between the door and the women.
Victor Hale knocked again.
"Claire?"
Evelyn whispered, "Don't let him in."
Claire looked at her.
For the first time that day, Evelyn seemed genuinely afraid.
Not startled.
Afraid.
Claire stood.
"Open the door."
Daniel turned.
"Are you sure?"
"No. Open it anyway."
Victor was seventy-one and carried age like a tailored suit. Silver hair. Expensive watch. Gentle eyes that had convinced thousands of voters he cared deeply about whatever room he entered.
He smiled when the door opened.
The smile faded when he saw the photograph.
Only for a second.
But Claire saw it.
So did Daniel.
Victor recovered.
"Well," he said softly. "I haven't seen that in years."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"You recognize it?"
"Of course. Thomas was an old friend."
"And my mother?"
Victor looked at Evelyn.
A warning passed between them.
"Anne worked for my firm briefly."
"Briefly?"
"Several years."
Claire stepped closer.
"Did you know she was pregnant with me?"
Victor's expression remained calm.
"I knew she had a child."
"That's not what I asked."
Daniel watched him.
Victor gave Claire a sad smile.
"Your mother had a difficult life. I don't think reopening old wounds on your wedding day will help you."
"It's not my wedding day anymore."
That seemed to surprise him.
Good.
Claire held out the letter.
"My mother said Thomas kept a promise. Do you know what that means?"
Victor did not touch the page.
"No."
"Do you know why she said silence was the price of my safety?"
His jaw tightened.
Again, only for a second.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
"You should have destroyed that."
The room went completely still.
Evelyn stood.
"You told me you didn't know the letter existed."
Victor's eyes shifted.
A mistake.
A tiny one.
But after thirty-two years of other people deciding what Claire deserved to know, she was suddenly very good at noticing tiny mistakes.
Daniel took one step toward Victor.
"Leave."
Victor looked at Claire.
"I would be careful."
"Is that advice?"
"It is kindness."
Claire shook her head.
"No. Kindness doesn't sound like a threat."
Victor's smile disappeared.
He walked away without another word.
Claire shut the door.
Then she turned to Evelyn.
"You know more than you've told me."
Evelyn stared at the floor.
"Yes."
"How much more?"
May you like
Evelyn whispered the answer.
"Enough to know that Victor has been afraid of you since the day you were born."
